Music Engagement Program

Kingsford Smith School - Music Engagement Program

This program concentrates on the enjoyment and social benefits of music making. It is based on the Music Engagement Program pioneered by Dr Susan West, School of Music at the ANU. Working with the principle that people should make music for the mutual benefit of all, students are exposed to a wide ranging repertoire of songs and games as well as basic music notation and skills. Students are encouraged to create music so that others can join in.

A major part of this program, is to make strong bonds with the community through social singing events, be it within the school or further afield.

Students engage in whole school singing at regular assemblies. Periodic events such as community singing nights and " Grandfriends" morning teas facilitate inter-generational performances. Also students visit the elderly residents of the local nursing home, and sing up a storm with songs that are classified as oldies but goodies. This links with the program of community service/partnership in the Middle and Senior school.
